In 1991 UNESCO declared Lima’s Historical City Center a World Cultural Heritage site for its colonial architecture. Conference attendees and their companions will have the opportunity to experience the offerings of one of the most diverse countries worldwide and visit some of the best tourist destinations in the world, from pre-Hispanic temples such as Pachacamac (15 miles south of Lima) -which was the center of oracles and religious pilgrimages over different periods- to old colonial mansions, churches and museums rich in history. Those who admire the remains of the past will find magnificent testimonies to ancient cultures that date back to civilizations as old as Mesopotamia, such as Caral, with an unmistakable identity that created wonders as the Royal Tombs of Sipan, the Nasca Lines, Chan Chan and Machu Picchu.

Heir to ancient cultures and a rich colonial tradition, Peru is a magical spot which involves one of the richest biodiversities of Earth. Because of its racial melting pot, the country is home to multiple expressions of its people through their ancient, creative and colorful folk art. Thinking of Peru, the first thing that springs to mind is the wealth of its age-old cultures and the legendary Inca empire. While Peru inevitably evokes images of Machu Picchu and the Inca empire, the country is also riddled with archeological sites which are a legacy of even more ancient times, when great civilizations bequeathed their art, customs and ritual, their wisdom and skills.

Peru’s economic growth remains as one of the most important in the region, 6% in 2005. This permanent growth has been led by private investment, private consumption and a very important increase in our exports. According to IMF this growth will remain around 5% during 2006, more than the average expected for the Latin American region (4.3%). See Appendix 1.
