What is it like to have a global career? A "global career" is based upon the concept of being a global citizen. It recognizes one's unique cultural heritage as the foundation of who we are, and recognizes how the advancements in technology and communications now provide an opportunity to work and interact with people from all over the globe by phone and through visual applications. 

Being a global citizen is an orientation, a mindset. Students will be encouraged to explore their beliefs about purpose from both practical and existential/spiritual vantage points.

According to the 2016 Deloitte Millennial Survey almost nine out of 10 (87 percent) millennials globally, believe that "the success of a business should be measured in terms of more than just its financial performance". Also, according to LinkedIn's 2016 global study, "Purpose at Work," examining the role of purpose in the workplace, "purpose-oriented employees have higher levels of engagement and fulfillment with their jobs outperforming their peers".

The course weaves together opportunities to learn more about one's self while teaching skills that may be used throughout their careers. The approach is to go within in order to have success in the outer world. This means that one will be provided with the opportunity to explore their inner landscape in order to be able to successfully navigate the world outside.

Some of us know what our purpose is from an early stage in life, while others have been influenced by family members or prominent people in their lives. Others, on the other hand, have strong family ties and directives as to what their life should look like and may be hesitant to explore what their purpose might be, might not know it, and/or feel their purpose is in conflict with what their family's intentions and desires are for them. Appreciating the importance of awareness of one's purpose, even if it may not become fully clear, is an important step in order to reach a satisfying work life/career.

This course invites students to explore their interest in working outside of their home country, and/or within a multinational organization with local offices and opportunities worldwide. Students will explore their ideas about working globally and what that means for them, learn self-management skills, and different ways to communicate more effectively with others. They will also be invited to rewrite their bios and resumes to attract potential employers or proactively search for them. Also, they will develop a short introductory video and elevator speech.

Furthermore, they will have the opportunity to interview people working globally and find out about their own career path. They will learn how to network effectively and be given an assignment to practice networking.

This is a robust exploration of the intersections of purpose, a global mindset, skills, and a desire to create one's perfect career. It is my hope and intention that by the end of the course students will have become more aware of elements that are essential to their lifelong success and happiness. They will likely not have all the answers, but will come away with an insight most people will never have achieved.

Construir una carrera global y mantenerte fiel a quién eres 

El mundo se ha vuelto muy pequeño y ahora las personas pueden comunicarse desde cualquier parte de la tierra como en ningún otro momento de la historia. Además, hoy en día existe un mayor anhelo por explorar y trabajar en diversos países en el extranjero. La realidad es, sin embargo, que trabajar en el extranjero puede ser un gran desafío. En este curso, justamente, los estudiantes exploraran qué significa trabajar globalmente, participando en actividades teóricas y prácticas. 

¿Qué significa tener una carrera global? Una "carrera global" se basa en el concepto de ser un ciudadano global. Reconoce la herencia cultural propia y única como fundamento de lo que somos y qué avances en tecnología y comunicaciones proveen una oportunidad para trabajar e interactuar con personas de todo el mundo por teléfono y aplicaciones virtuales. Ser un ciudadano global es una orientación y una forma de pensar. Aquí los estudiantes aprenderán a explorar sus creencias con ejemplos prácticos, existenciales y espirituales.

De acuerdo a la encuesta "2016 Deloitte Millennial Survey", 9 de cada 10 (87 por ciento) de millennials cree que "el éxito de un negocio debería ser medido no solo en términos de rendimiento financiero". De acuerdo al estudio del 2016 de LinkedIn, "Purpose at work", "los empleados orientados por un propósito tienen niveles más altos de compromiso y cumplimiento con su trabajo, superando así a sus colegas". De esta forma, el curso mezcla oportunidades para aprender más sobre uno mismo mientras enseña habilidades que pueden ser utilizadas a lo largo de una carrera profesional (siempre centrándose en tener éxito en el exterior).

Si bien algunos de nosotros ya sabemos cuál es nuestro propósito de vida desde temprana edad, otras personas aún no lo descubren y desconocen qué camino tomar. Por ello, este curso invita a que los estudiantes exploren el trabajar fuera de su país natal, y/o dentro de una empresa multinacional con oficinas en el exterior.

Aquí los estudiantes explorarán sus ideas sobre trabajar globalmente y lo que esto representa para su futuro; además, aprenderán habilidades de manejo propio y comunicación efectiva. También serán invitados a reescribir sus biografías y currículos para así atraer a empleadores potenciales -o buscarlos proactivamente-, y desarrollarán un corto video introductorio para fortalecerse como creadores de su propia marca personal. 

El curso también brinda la oportunidad de entrevistar a personas que trabajan en el exterior, ya que los estudiantes también tendrán la oportunidad de practicar el networking durante este curso. 

Mi esperanza e intención es que para el fin del curso los estudiantes estén conscientes de los elementos que son esenciales para su éxito y felicidad a largo plazo. Probablemente no encuentren todas esas respuestas, pero la idea es que avancen más con la ayuda y el aporte de estos conocimientos.
